Origins and Foundation
Coliseum began as a skate shop in Melrose, Massachusetts, and evolved into a creative nucleus where skating, filming, photography, and editing were treated as equal disciplines. Before skateboarding lived online, it lived on VHS tapes, contact sheets, and long nights spent editing footage.
The Coliseum Video released in 1999, credited to Matt Roman and Arty, documented the foundation of the scene and established the visual language that would soon influence skateboarding globally.

Coliseum was never about fitting a mold.
It was about recognizing something rare in people who didn’t look alike, skate alike, or come from the same place — but shared the same hunger.
PJ Ladd was precision and obsession — architecture on concrete. Ryan Gallant brought balance, flow, and unteachable style.
Alexis Sablone embodied fearless creativity and forward vision. Jereme Rogers was raw energy, high stakes, and ambition. Happy was heart — skateboarding for joy.
Southie represented grit and street-earned confidence.
Baby Schizo was originality — impossible to replicate.
King of Freestyle pushed experimentation beyond convention. Colin Fisk was consistency — the glue that held it together.
They didn’t look like a traditional team. They were misfits that worked.
What started in a small shop became careers, businesses, influence — and for some, millions. Not by chasing hype, but by earning everything the hard way.
Coliseum didn’t manufacture stars.
It built an environment where talent survived long enough to become legacy.

Coliseum Skate Legacy
Coliseum Skate isn’t just a shop — it’s a cultural touchstone born from true skateboarding passion.
Founded and run by Matt Roman and Arty Vagianos, Coliseum became one of the most iconic hubs of East Coast skate culture in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Long before social media and global branding, Matt and Arty built something genuine: a space where local kids, visiting pros, and lifelong skateboarders could come together, share ideas, push each other, and simply skate.
They didn’t just sell boards — they cultivated community. Skaters from all over would make the pilgrimage to Coliseum in Melrose, MA and Boston, not just to shop, but to be part of something bigger. It was a place where careers intersected, where crews were formed, and where creativity thrived.
Coliseum’s influence rippled outward through seminal skate videos like The Coliseum Video 1999 and PJ Ladd’s Wonderful, Horrible, Life, projects that showcased raw talent and authentic street skating long before skateboarding was streamlined for mass audiences.
At its core, Coliseum was — and remains — about real skateboarding: the people, the places, the grit, the progression.
ColiseumSkate.com carries that legacy forward as a living archive, a cultural museum, and a creative platform built to honor the past while remaining open to the future.

Your support and contributions will enable us to meet our goals.
